The difference between breathwork and meditation: Which one fits you best?

The difference between breathwork and meditation: Which one fits you best?

Many people use the words breathwork and meditation interchangeably. Yet there are clear differences between breathwork and meditation, both in their purpose and in how they work. In this article, I explain the difference between breath coaching and meditation, how they complement each other, and how you can apply both in your daily life.

What is breathwork?

Breathwork focuses on your natural breathing pattern and how it influences both your body and mind. In my practice in Kampenhout, I guide people to reconnect with their breath to find calm, energy, and balance again. Breathwork is practical, body-oriented, and helps you restore a healthy breathing rhythm.

A breathwork instructor looks at three dimensions of breathing:

  • Biochemical focusing on the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and the metabolism connected to it. An imbalance here can lead for example to fatigue or shortness of breath.
  • Biomechanical addressing the physical function of the breathing muscles such as the diaphragm, intercostal muscles, and the mobility of the rib cage. A smooth, functional breath supports your posture and vitality.
  • Psychological exploring the mental and emotional aspects of breathing. Stress can cause irregular breathing, but disturbed breathing can also increase stress.

By bringing these three dimensions into balance, breathwork helps you manage stress, tension, and energy loss more effectively.

Breathwork differs from meditation because it is physiological and body-focused — it’s about how your breathing works and what happens in your body, rather than letting go of thoughts. At the same time, when you focus on your breath, you are naturally meditating. In that way, breath coaching becomes a practical doorway to more calm, focus, and inner balance.

What is meditation?

Meditation is a mental and emotional practice where you direct your attention to the present moment. Through meditation, you learn to be more consciously present, without judging your experience. It helps your mind slow down, quiet your thoughts, and better cope with stress and overstimulation.

While breathwork starts from the body and the breath, meditation begins with the mind and awareness. Yet both influence each other: during meditation, your breathing naturally slows down, and through breathwork, you can enter a meditative state more easily.

There are many forms of meditation such as mindfulness, concentration meditation, or guided visualization but the goal remains the same: more inner peace, focus, and resilience. By meditating regularly, you enhance your ability to relax, gain perspective, and live more consciously.

In my practice in Kampenhout, I often see that meditation becomes a natural complement to breathwork. When the body relaxes through breathwork, the mind can let go more easily. And the other way around: a calm mind supports a free, natural breath.

The main differences between breath coaching and meditation

Aspect Breathwork Meditation
Goal Bringing body and mind into balance through breathing (biochemical, biomechanical, and psychological) Developing mental calm and awareness through attention training
Focus Conscious breathing and body awareness Observing thoughts and emotions
Technique Active breathing exercises that influence both physiology and mindset Passive attention practice, often through silence or concentration
Application Helpful for stress, tension, fatigue, panic attacks, low energy, sport performance, ... Helpful for overthinking, insomnia, or mental overload

When to choose breathwork or meditation?

If you often feel tension in your chest, neck, or belly, breathwork is often a good starting point. You’ll relearn how to breathe deeply, which stabilizes your nervous system.

If you experience mental restlessness or racing thoughts, meditation can be a powerful tool. Both reinforce each other: those who learn to breathe well can meditate more deeply, and those who meditate regularly breathe more calmly.

Conclusion: The difference between breathwork and meditation is an invitation to balance

The difference between breath coaching and meditation is subtle but meaningful. Breath coaching uses the breath as a bridge between body and mind, while meditation helps you stay consciously present in that calm state. Together, they form a powerful combination for anyone seeking more balance, focus, and energy.

Whether you live in Kampenhout, Mechelen, or Leuven: with conscious breathing and regular meditation, you can reduce stress, sleep better, and live with more resilience and ease.
